Nagpur:Wearing a helmet helped two traffic constables avert serious head injury when they were knocked down by a car and run over by a truck at Mhalgi Nagar square on Friday afternoon. Traffic police constable Nitin Yerpude’s right leg, which came under the rear wheels of the truck has, however suffered injuries and multiple fractures. His colleague, Sudhakar Katole escaped the accident with minor bruises.Registering officer, API AK Lingurkar said that both the constables were wearing helmet which probably saved them further injuries.
Katole told the police that they were on patrolling duty and were heading from Mhalgi Nagar Square towards Uday Nagar Square when the accident happened and Yerpude was driving the bike.
“The square is already a busy one. When the signal turned green, a cream coloured car knocked down the duo’s bike and Yerpude lost control and fell down. The truck, coming from behind, could not control its speed and ran over them. Luckily they were lying in the space between the wheels, and didn’t come under it, except for Yerpude’s right leg,” informed Lingurkar.
Police told that while the car driver fled the spot with his vehicle, the truck driver left his truck and ran away. Nearby traffic cops rushed both the injured to hospital. Police sources said that though doctors had not confirmed the need for amputation of Yerpude’s right leg, its possibility could not be ruled out. Katole was discharged after preliminary treatment. Hudkeshwar police has booked the unidentified car as well the truck driver. The truck has been seized. Cops are searching for the both the accused drivers.
